Cygnet Yarns

Chenille, a yarn full of character

Chenille refers to a type of yarn, which when woven, results in a fabric also known as chenille. It’s a French term for ‘caterpillar’ because of its resemblance to a furry caterpillar. Soft to the touch and durable, chenille can be used for a multitude of fabric requirements, ranging from clothing to upholstery.

How are Chenille Yarns made?

Chenilles are made by placing short lengths of yarn called the 'pile' between two “core yarns” and then twisting the yarn together. The wrapped yarns are cut to produce a pile effect. The edges of these piles then stand at right angles to the yarn’s core, adding to chenille’s softness and characteristic look.

Why choose a Chenille Yarn?

Number one is their softness, super soft to the touch. They are thick and durable yarns with a good drape (especially when worked on bigger needles or hooks) Great for multi-uses such as homewares such as rugs, cushion covers, giant blankets and garments such as sweaters, shawls, tunics, gloves, cardigans and robes. Perfect for baby blankets due to their incredible softness, offering snug warmth and a drapey effect for little ones.

A cheeky fact about Chenille Yarns

As the fibres of a Chenille catch the light at different angles, it can appear iridescent even though no iridescent fibres are used.
